Food Loop Maiden Lane is a new project running on the Maiden Lane estate, in Camden, north London.
The aim of the project is to work with residents to design a scheme that will help them to recycle their food waste. The food waste will be composted on-site and used to grow fruit and vegetables.
We believe that the best way to get people to care about food waste is by making the local benefits of recycling and composting visible, and by ensuring that people are able to design a system that best meets their needs.
The project is a collaboration between the residents of Maiden Lane, SEED Foundation and the Policy Studies Institute, with the support of Camden Council. The project is funded by Defra’s Sustainable Behaviours Unit.

Is your project far enough advanced to want any volunteer help preparing ground for veg growing etc? I visit London about two weekends per month and want to get involved in a community veg growing project. I could only offer a few hours every other weekend but am an exprienced grower and have done a lot of wildlife conservation volunteering.

Hello there. Thanks for the interest. At the moment, we’re concentrating on getting the food waste collections up and running though will soon be turning our attention to the food-growing side of things. The collections start in a fortnight after which it will be another month or so before we have any compost. We are sure to need help in the coming months though – can we get back to you soon?

I just think there is plenty of places to grow things we could make forest gardens and use a lot more permaculture designs on the estate.and look into transition towns
